At the age of six, Madeleine counts up to thirty in the semi-darkness of her bedroom, in which the muffled sounds of loud voices of arguing adults can be heard. On a beach, she listens to the voice of a shellfish, to the incessant rhythm of the waves. Feeling lonely, she devises for herself a path towards emancipation.
